"A Brush with Kindness Week" 2015

Post Date:09/18/2015 11:12 AM

Heartland Habitat for Humanity is one of nearly 40 Habitat affiliates partnering with Valspar, Habitat’s national paint partner, and Wells Fargo to launch "A Brush with Kindness Week,” this September 19-26. A Brush with Kindness Week is a nationwide effort to transform neighborhoods by painting, providing minor exterior home repairs, landscaping, and cleaning up yards in partnership with low-income homeowners, many of whom are elderly or have a disability. Heartland Habitat for Humanity volunteers will work on three home projects in Prairie Village.

Since 1976, Habitat has advocated improving access to decent and affordable shelter and offers a variety of housing support that enable families with limited means to make needed improvements on their homes as their time and resources allow. With the changes in the economy affecting homeowners, Habitat launched a program called “A Brush with Kindness” to help homeowners remain in their homes and relieve the burden of the financial and physical challenges related to keeping up the responsibilities of home ownership.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity, serving five counties in the metropolitan Kansas City area, began A Brush with Kindness in 2011; since that time more than 150 families have been assisted through this program.  In order to complete these projects, donations are received to cover for the costs of materials including materials, tools, and qualified staff to survey properties and supervise the volunteers in the completion of the project.

Heartland Habitat has worked closely with the Property Maintenance Department with the City of Prairie Village to identify homeowners who need assistance maintaining their properties to comply with local ordinances.  To pay for these projects, the Prairie Village Foundation has provided the financial resources to help qualified homeowners in Prairie Village. Heartland Habitat solicits the volunteer support from the community by working with companies, faith organizations, and civic groups to provide the “sweat equity” to complete the projects.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity is very proud to be selected as one of 40 affiliates out of the 1,500 at Habitat to work on A Brush with Kindness Week.  The decision to help three families in Prairie Village is a strong statement of the partnership that has developed since 2011 with the City of Prairie Village and the Prairie Village Foundation.
