Seat belt fine increase effective July 1
The Kansas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 89 which will raise the seat belt fine beginning July 1, 2017 from $10 to $30. The new law will direct $20 from each violation to the Seat Belt Safety Fund to help expand the SAFE program. SAFE is a teen-run, peer-to-peer program focusing on increasing teen restraint compliance through education, positive rewards and enforcement. It is designed to bring awareness to the importance of wearing a seat belt, therefore reducing the number of motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities among Kansas teens.
