VILLAGE VISION FAQ

What is Village Vision?
Village Vision is a community-wide effort to chart a course for Prairie Village’s future. For over fifty years, Prairie Village has been a premier community. This visioning process will help us position Prairie Village for continued success as a great place to live, work, and play. One of the constants in life is change, and it’s time for Prairie Village to make decisions and set goals for how we, as a community, will face the future. We need your help to make this work. We can’t do it without you!

How will the Village Vision be developed?
The City of Prairie Village has not conducted a comprehensive visioning process in over ten years. So the Village Vision will be developed from scratch, free of any preconceived ideas, agendas, or outcomes. Of course, our community’s history and values will play an important role, but the Village Vision is about the future, not the past.

This makes your participation vital. What are your likes and dislikes about Prairie Village? What kind of a community do you want to leave for future generations? Come share your thoughts and dreams for Prairie Village’s future at a series of public meetings. Everyone is welcome to participate in these meetings.

When are the community visioning workshops?
Four community visioning workshops will be held in late April and early May at locations throughout the City. Make plans to attend one of these meetings:

Why create a vision?
One of the constants in life is change. Although Prairie Village has remained a very stable community over the years, our surroundings have changed significantly. When Prairie Village was incorporated in 1951, it was on the outskirts of the metropolitan area. Now, Prairie Village is considered a “first-tier” or “inner-ring” suburb. At the same time, the tastes and desires of the public have changed. For example, the classic Prairie Village ranch or cape cod home is great, as evidenced by property values in Prairie Village. However, these homes do not always provide amenities that some home buyers want, like large closets and two car garages. In addition, Prairie Village’s population has been steadily declining as families move further south in search of larger homes with more amenities.

We can’t freeze Prairie Village in time or somehow turn back the clock. However, we can guide change in ways that reflect the community’s goals, values, and desires, preserving the best of Prairie Village for future generations.

What is a visioning process?
A community visioning process is one that begins with dreams, then works steadily toward developing strategies to make these dreams a reality. It is a citizen-based process where the people of the community prepare a vision (dream) and plan for the future. There are many ways individuals, businesses, and neighborhoods can participate in the visioning process.

Meetings will be held to collect your ideas about the future of Prairie Village. Next, a community-wide workshop will be held to develop shared goals for the future and ways to turn those goals into reality. Finally, a City-wide open house will be offered to allow Prairie Village residents and business owners an opportunity to review the progress of their efforts, identify their priority goals, and volunteer to help in getting things started to reach these goals.

Why should I come to these meetings?
WE NEED YOU, AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY IS IMPORTANT. Decisions made at these meetings will affect anyone who lives or works in Prairie Village.

How long do the meetings last?
Each meeting will last approximately two hours.

What will the meetings be like?
After brief opening remarks, participants will join a small group to discuss ideas and topics suggested by people who live and work in Prairie Village – people just like you. Each group will have a trained facilitator who will work with you to create an atmosphere that is productive, safe and fun.

Will my ideas matter?
Yes, every idea counts! Any idea could be the one that makes a difference or solves a problem. But the only way to have your ideas heard is to participate.

How can I participate?
Participating is easy. Just attend one of the several public meetings. Look for meeting announcements in the newspaper or on-line at www.pvkansas.com

You can also help by telling your friends and neighbors about the Village Vision, and encourage them to attend the public meetings.

Do I have to be an expert to contribute my ideas?
If you live, work, shop, or play in Prairie Village, YOU ARE THE EXPERT. Who knows Prairie Village better than you do?

I like things the way they are. Why change?
Things change all of the time. Nothing stays the same. Given this, let’s work together to determine what makes Prairie Village unique, and use it as the basis for developing our community’s future.

Will I be able to talk about the needs of my neighborhood?
Yes. But remember, the Village Vision is just that, a vision for the entire community.
