Besides
offering competitive wages and a great working environment, the City of
Prairie Village offers a wide range of benefits to employees and their
families. Below is a brief summary of benefits offered to City employees. You may also download a benefits summary.
Paid Leave BenefitsVacationFull-time Employees Employees being earning paid vacation time upon date of hire. Paid Vacation Time is accrued on a per-pay period basis, resulting in the following annual vacation benefit based on years of service:
Part-Time Employees Regular part-time employees earn vacation benefits based on total number of hours worked. For example, a regular part-time employee who works a minimum of 1,040 hours per year would accumulate paid vacation in an amount to provide a total of 5 ½ vacation days per year. Seasonal and Temporary Employees Seasonal and temporary employees do not earn vacation benefits Sick LeaveEmployees being earning paid sick leave upon date of hire. A trial or regular employee earns and accrues one-half day of sick leave on a bi-weekly basis to a maximum of 12 days per calendar year. Sick leave with pay may be accumulated to a maximum of one hundred forty (140) days. Trial and regular part-time employees may earn sick leave benefits based on the total number of hours worked. Paid HolidaysThe City recognizes the following paid holidays:
Insurance BenefitsHealth InsuranceAll regular employees may enroll in a basic Health Insurance Plan provided through United Healthcare. The City pays 100% of the full monthly premium for individuals and contributes substantially toward Employee +1 and Family (Employee + 2 or more) coverage. Dental InsuranceAll regular employees and their dependents may enroll in a dental insurance program provided through Delta Dental of Kansas. The City pays for 100% of the employee's dental insurance premium. Vision InsuranceAll regular employees and their dependents may enroll in a vision insurance program provided through Spectera. The City pays for 100% of the employee's dental insurance premium. Life InsuranceThe following Life Insurance coverages are provided:
Long-Term Care InsuranceAfter one year of continuous employment, the City provides a basic long-term care benefit for employees. Employees may, at their expense, obtain additional long-term care coverage at attractive rates. Long-Term Disability InsuranceThe City pays the insurance costs for a basic long-term disability plan for each employee. City employees are eligible for long-term disability benefits on the first of the month following 30 continuous days of employment. These benefits become available after 90 days of total disability within a 180 day period. Workers' Compensation InsuranceEmployees injured on the job are covered by the Kansas Workers' Compensation Act. Earned sick leave and vacation time can be used to supplement workers compensation payments not to exceed the employee's normal salary. Retirement BenefitsDeferred CompensationThe City participates as a joint contract owner with the State of Kansas in a Group Variable Annuity Contract issued by ING. Employees may elect to participate in this plan which allows them to invest a portion of current income for retirement under a planned program and allows them to defer payment of current income taxes in those contributions until the money is received as a retirement benefit. This plan allows employees to choose from a wide range of investment options. KPERS Retirement PlanEligible employees are enrolled in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) after completing one year of service. Each employee participating in the plan contributes 4% of his/her total salary. This amount is withheld from every payment to the employee for salary/wages. The City contributes to KPERS a percent of the wages paid to eligible employees, the amount of City contribution is calculated by the KPERS Board. Supplemental Pension PlanEligible employees are also enrolled in the City's supplemental retirement plan. The City contributes 5% of the employee's salary per year to plan; the contribution per employee shall not exceed $2,500 per year. Employees do not contribute to this plan. Police Pension PlanThe City of Prairie Village offers a defined benefit pension plan for commissioned police officers. Under the plan, the officer contributes 4% of his/her base salary annually. The City's contribution may vary based on the actuary's calculations. The plan allows officers to accumulate a pension benefit of 2 ½% of the officer's final salary for each year of service. A member may retire after 20 years of service at 50% of his/her salary. Service points are capped at 25 years, resulting in a maximum benefit of 62 1/2% of base salary after 25 years of service. Members of the plan are fully vested after 15 years of service, with partial vesting beginning after five years of service.
Other Benefit ProgramsEducational Expense ReimbursementThe City encourages employees to take advantage of educational courses which will improve job performance and prepare employees for promotional opportunities. After one year of full-time employment and with the prior approval of the employee's Manager and the Mayor, the City may pay up to fifty percent (50%) of eligible educational expenses subject to the IRS non-taxable limit for accountable plans. Employee Assistance Program (EAP)The City of Prairie Village provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through New Directions which provides confidential professional consultation and short-term counseling for employees and their family members at no charge. The program is designed to assist employees with personal issues and/or workplace issues. Services are available to family members who reside with the employee. For confidential assistance, please contact New Directions directly at 816-395-3866 or 800-669-6777 anytime 24-hours/day. If you prefer, you may also visit the New Directions web site at www.ndbh.com. The City of Prairie Village will not be advised that you have used this service. Flexible Benefits Plan (Section 125 Cafeteria Plan)The City has established a Flexible Benefit Plan under Section 125 of the IRS code which allows eligible employees to pay their monthly premiums for medical and dental insurance on a pre-tax basis. This IRS Code also allows employees to contribute pre-tax dollars for un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care expenses. All regular employees are eligible to participate in the program. Recreation MembershipsAll regular full-time and part-time employees, their spouses, and children living in the same home with the employee will be provided with a Prairie Village Pool membership at no charge. Wellness ProgramThrough an agreement with the YMCA, the City partially subsidizes the cost of YMCA membership for City employees and their families. |
