Solid Waste Management Q & A

When is my pickup day?

Solid waste, recyclable, and yard waste collection is made once per week. Use the Pickup Schedule Map to identify the collection day for your home.

When can I set my trash out for collection?

Solid waste, recyclables, and yard waste should be set out no later than 7:30 am on your regular pickup day. The hauler cannot collect on arterial streets before 9:00 am or between 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Where should I set my trash for collection?

Trash cans, trash bags, recycling bins, etc. must be placed within 10 feet of the curb. Please do not block sidewalks or place containers in the street.

How much can I put out?

There is no limit of the amount of trash, recyclables or yard waste you may leave for the collector to pick up as long as it is properly prepared.

What should I put my trash in?

Solid waste containers must not exceed 35 gallons in size and 65 pounds weight. It is recommended that lids be placed on containers. Disposable plastic and paper bags are also acceptable.

Yard Waste

If I don't have time to separate my trash, can I throw it all away in the same bag?

Yard waste should be separated from your normal household trash. Please place yard waste and recyclables on one side of your driveway and household trash on the other side.

Are paper bags required for compost?

You may put your yard waste in plastic bags, but plastic bags cannot go into the compost site. We suggest you use biodegradable paper bags for yard waste. These may be purchased at local hardware stores.

How do I prepare branches and tree limbs for collection?

Bundles of brush or branches must be securely tied. Tree limbs less than four inches in diameter and brush should be securely tied in bundles (not larger than 48 inches long and 18 inches in diameter when not placed in storage containers.)

Note: Tree limbs or branches more than four inches in diameter will not be collected.

Special Pickup

What do I do if I have large items?

If a special pickup is required for large items, contact a hauler directly. They may require an additional charge for this service. If residents leave unsuitable items for pickup, the contractor will notify the resident by a tag system that special pickup is required.

What about paint, motor oil, and other hazardous waste?

Contact the Johnson County Environmental Department at 913-715-6900. The hazardous waste site is opened on an appointment-only basis.

For more information about Johnson County's household Hazardous waste program, visit the Johnson County Environmental Department online.
