Q. What happens when an animal is found?
A. Lost animals located in Prairie Village and
Mission Hills are taken to the Animal Medical Center (AMC) at 204 West 75th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64114 - 816-333-9000. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Animals are held for 10 days and placed for adoption at that time if the animal is suitable. If you live close to another municipality,
you should check with them --.pets know no boundaries!
Q. How can you prevent your pet from becoming lost?
A. Always walk your dog on a leash -- our vets at AMC recommend a "gentle leader" or harness. You can bring your pet to AMC for a proper fitting. Your dog should have a collar with a current rabies tag, a City license, and an ID tag with at least a current phone number. You may want to think about having your pet microchipped, which is available at AMC for $50.00. It is always a good idea to have a current photo of each of your pets.
Q. How can I adopt a pet?
A. AMC lists all unclaimed animals up for adoption on two websites: animalmedicalcenterkc.com and petfinder.com
Leash Law
Q. Can you explain the leash law in Prairie Village?
A. The City's Leash Law requires dogs to be confined to the
property of their owner/keeper, except when taken off the premises
on a leash, in a cage, or in a car. Cats must be under the control
of their owner/keeper. Cats which cause injury or damage to
property shall be presumed not to be under the control of their
owner/keeper.
The City's Community Service Officers are responsible for enforcing
the City's animal control ordinances.; They both respond to
complaints and patrol the City. Dogs will be picked up when observed
or reported running loose.
Please call 913-642-6868
