The Prairie Village Police Department has added The Communicator!
notification system to its emergency communications network.
Q. What is The Communicator?
A. The Communicator is a high-speed notification system capable
of notifying Prairie Village residents of a potential threat to
public safety in a matter of minutes.
In addition to providing emergency notifications, The Communicator
can also notify residents of lost children, endangered adults, or
criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Residents can then assist
police in locating the missing parties or by notifying the Police
Department of suspicious activity.
Q. How does the system work?
A. The Communicator operates on published telephone numbers
only. These numbers are programmed into the mapping software. When
an area of the map is highlighted, the system will deliver a pre-recorded
message to telephone numbers located in that area. This will include
residences, businesses, and schools, ANY published telephone number.
If you have a non-published number, your information will
not be in the computer, and you will not receive a call.
The use of The Communicator will be strictly limited to only send
you messages regarding public safety. It is not meant to relay non-essential
messages.
Q. What do I do when I receive a call?
A. Residents are asked to take a few moments and listen to
the pre-recorded message. The message will contain important information
and instructions. Should you receive a message, and have information
for the police, please call 913-642-5151 to inform the dispatcher.
If you do not have any further information, contacting the
Police Department is not necessary.
Q. What if my number is not published and I want to be
notified by The Communicator?
A. If you would like to be included in The Communicator,
please contact the Communications Supervisor at 913-385-4620. Since its introduction in early 2003, over 200
Prairie Village residents have added their non-published phone numbers
to the Communicator system. Download the form.
Q. What if I don't want to be notified by the Communicator?
A. If you would like to be excluded from the Communicator,
please send an e-mail to Tim Kobe.
Q. Can the Communicator notify me on my cell phone?
A. Yes! If you would like to receive notifications on your
cell phone instead of your home phone, please contact the Communications Supervisor at 913-385-4620.
Q. If I provide a non-published number to the Police Department,
will the number be made public?
A. No. All numbers provided will only be used by the Prairie
Village Police Department. The list will not be given or sold to
any other party(ies) outside of the Department.
Q. Will the Communicator
work if I use a special communications (TDD, TTY) device?
A. Yes. The
City wishes to ensure that this important service is provided to
residents who need special communications in order to receive messages
from the Communicator emergency notification system. If you or any
other resident are using a special communication service and want
to be contacted by The Communicator system, call 913-385-4620. All information submitted will be confidential
and used solely for the Communicator System.
For more information about
the Communicator, contact the Communications Supervisor at 913-385-4620.
