Arbor Day Celebration

Celebrate Arbor Day with the Prairie Village Tree Board. A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, in Porter Park where a tree has been planted in memory of this year's honoree, Sarah Milgrim.

On January 4, 1872, J. Sterling Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called “Arbor Day” at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture.  The date was set for April 10, 1872.  Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for properly planting the largest number of trees on that day.  It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. (An excerpt from “The History of Arbor Day” by the Arbor Day Foundation)
Join us celebrating Arbor Day where a tree has been planted in memory of Sarah Lynn Milgrim.
“Sarah Lynn Milgrim was born on December 29th, 1998 and grew up in Prairie Village.
Though she travelled throughout the world, she called Prairie Village home. Sarah was an outstanding citizen who devoted her life to making positive change in the world.
Sarah was passionate about environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and her Jewish culture and heritage. During her life, Sarah strove to bring peace to the Middle East by building bridges and connecting people through diplomacy. Sarah stood up for social causes, spoke for those who don’t have a voice and developed relationships with people of different cultures. She moved through the world with kindness and a deep love for peace and humanity. She was not only committed to making the world a better place, she believed it could be done.” (written by Marlene Nagel)
