Tree Board seeks photos of Bennett Park American Elm Tree

Post Date:04/11/2019
The Prairie Village Tree Board is working to create a plaque to tell the story of a historic American Elm tree that stood for many years in Bennett Park at 77th Street and Rosewood. The tree was estimated to be well over 200 years old when it was removed last year. At over 100 feet tall and more than 5 feet in diameter, it was one of the largest American Elm trees in the state of Kansas.

The tree was evaluated last April. The canopy was hollowed, and, ultimately, the tree had to be removed for the safety of park guests. The massive tree stump remains in the nature play area at Bennett Park.

The Tree Board is seeking photos of the tree to be incorporated into the plaque, next to the remaining stump. If you have a photo to share, please email a digital copy to afreburg@pvkansas.com. If you have any questions, please contact Tree Board Member Mark Morgan at mcmprairie@aol.com
