This year’s large item pickup schedule is as follows:   

• April 26 - all homes east of Roe and south of 75th Street
• May 3 - all homes east of Roe and north of 75th Street 
• May 10 - all homes west of Roe and north of 79th Street 
• May 17 - all homes west of Roe and south of 79th Street 

Items discarded must be at the curb by 7 a.m. 

Items collected include:

• Appliances
• Railroad ties (4’ or less in length)
• Fencing (cut into 3’ x 4’ sections. Bundle loose pickets for easy collection.)
• Furniture
• Carpet (cut into 4’ x 4’ sections) 
• Items not collected by regular trash service (excluding those listed below)

 Special Requirements and Restrictions:

• Large pieces of glass must be broken down and placed in boxes
• Swing sets must be disassembled
• No items larger than a household-size refrigerator
• Loose items should be bundled.

Materials which will NOT be collected include:

• Items weighing more than 150 pounds
• Tree limbs or tree stumps
• Hazardous materials (includes tires, toxic materials, paint, car batteries, fireplace ashes, solvents or oils)
• Excessive quantities of concrete, rubble, or refuse from remodeling, construction or demolition of buildings
• Waste from commercial establishments
• Compressed gas cylinders

Refrigerants

Republic will pick up refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and ice makers; however, the refrigerant must be removed. 

Report Missed Items

If your home is missed during a large item pickup, please contact the City at 913-381-6464 during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) The City will record your name, address, and phone number with a brief description of items missed.

Mattresses

In 2025, mattresses in good, reusable condition will be collected on each of the Fridays prior to large item pickup by Sleepyhead Beds - but only if they are registered in advance at pvkansas.com/pickupmymattress. A mattress is considered good and reusable if it has no stains, mold, large rips, holes, burns, or odors. Additionally, Sleepyhead Beds cannot accept king-size mattresses, Sleep Number products, waterbeds, futons, sofa/couch beds, day beds, or mattress toppers. Sleepyhead Beds collects these mattresses and distributes them to Kansas City area children and families in need, free of charge.

Mattresses for pickup should be at the curb by 7 a.m. If it looks like heavy rain is in the forecast, please cover your good-condition, reusable mattresses with a tarp or plastic sheeting if possible. 

Please note, apartments are not included in the large item pickup because they are not part of the City’s trash contract with Republic. While Sleepyhead Beds can still take good condition mattresses, Republic will not be by any apartment complexes to pick up those mattresses that are stained, torn, or not in reusable condition. 

Consider Alternatives

All items discarded through the annual pickup are taken to the landfill, regardless of their ability to be reused or recycled. The non-profit organization Re.Use.Full connects people with stuff to donate with nonprofits that can put those items to use. Re.Use.Full also holds repair cafes throughout the metro. Learn more online at reusefull.org. RecycleSpot.org is Greater Kansas City’s one-stop spot for recycling information. Mid-America Regional Council manages the website, which provides guidance on recycling as well as disposal of household hazardous waste. 

Lawn Equipment
After fluids are drained, lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers and other motorized lawn equipment in good working order are accepted by some thrift stores. Lawn equipment, after fluids are drained, can be recycled at Midwest Recycling Center. Lawn mowers can be recycled at some scrap metal dealers. Always call first for preparation requirements. 

Electronics (e-waste)
Electronics can contain lead, mercury and various other chemicals and hazardous wastes. Many consumer electronics (computers, mobile devices, stereos, etc.) are accepted at Best Buy, Office Depot & Office Max and Staples. Televisions are accepted at Best Buy and Midwest Recycling Center. Electronics are also accepted at the Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza on April 26. (Learn more.)

Small appliances (Coffee makers, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners)
Recycle — Small appliances that are no longer working can be recycled at Midwest Recycling Center. Donate — Small appliances that are in good working order can be donated to thrift stores. Small appliances are also accepted at the Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza on April 26. (Learn more.)

Books
Reuse – Books in good condition can be sold to used book stores or donated to libraries, thrift stores and charities. Recycle - Unusable paperback books can be recycled curbside and at Kansas City metro area recycling centers. Unusable hard bound books (damaged books, textbooks, reference books, etc.) can either be disposed in the trash, or pages can be torn out and recycled and covers/spines disposed in the trash. Large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dishwashers)
Backhaul — Most appliance retailers will take back and recycle your old appliance when they deliver its replacement. Ask your appliance retailer what recycling options they offer. Recycle — If you’re installing a new appliance yourself, or just have an old appliance you want to get rid of, your recycling options include: Drop-off - scrap metal dealers, used appliance dealers. Reuse — If your old appliance still works, there may be no need to recycle it. Contact a used appliance dealer or Habitat ReStore to find out if it can be reused. You can also list it on FreeCycle.org.

Bicycles
Used bicycles can be donated to thrift stores, RevolveKC and the 816 Bicycle Collective. Bikes in good condition are also accepted at the Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza on April 26. (Learn more.)

Exercise Equipment
Exercise equipment in good working condition is accepted at some thrift stores and at Play It Again Sports. It can be recycled at Midwest Recycling Center. 

Household Hazardous Waste 
HHW includes items such as paints, household cleaners, lawn and garden products, automotive fluids, bug sprays, beauty products, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and other chemical products. These flammable, toxic, corrosive or reactive items are labeled with danger, warning or caution. These items are accepted by your local HHW program.
