General Maintenance

Adjacent property owners are responsible for maintaining trees along City streets, including removal of hanging or broken branches, water, fertilizing, trimming, and spraying. Right-of-Way trees are City assets and cannot be removed without prior approval from the City.  If your Right-of-Way tree seems to be dead or dying you can complete a Service Request to have the Right-of-Way tree inspected.  The Right-of-Way on residential streets is approximately 10 to 12 foot behind the curb, dependent on the street.  To determine if a tree on your property is in the Right-of-Way, please contact Public Works at 913-385-4647.

Tree Trimming Program

The City Council initiated a Tree Trimming Program to provide clearance over streets and sidewalks.  This program is not on a request basis.  Specific work areas rotate annually for this program.  Most areas are trimmed every 4 to 5 years.  Please note that overall tree trimming is the property owners responsibility. The Tree Timming Program follows the following criteria:

  • Remove dead wood 2 inches in diameter or larger over the City Right-of-Way
  • Remove broken or damaged limbs over the City Right-of-Way
  • Remove limbs lower than 14 feet over the street
  • Remove limbs lower than 9 feet over the sidewalk
  • Remove limbs obscuring visibilty of traffic signs and signals
  • Remove limbs blocking streetlights
